Diverse and charming, this one-of-a-kind Wichita neighborhood boasts a large variety of architectural styles from as early as the 1880s. The architecture of College Hill represents a cross section of many respected styles in history (Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Prairie, Italian Renaissance, French and Spanish Eclectics, Classical and Neo-Classical); including a rare Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home that has become a museum.
The College Hill neighborhood covers nearly one square mile, with a gently sloping terrain in the western area, and a relatively level hill crest in the east. At its highest elevation, the ‘hill’ in College Hill rises approximately 75 feet above the downtown Wichtia and Old Town districts. The neighborhood gave rise during a ‘boom’ in 1886-1887 when Jacob H. Brown laid out the Brown Subdivision, known as College Hill. Brown co-founded the Wichita University, built upon the hill, and was in the process of establishing the Fairmount College further north. Brown made improvements all around the area, planting trees and grading streets. In many developing urban centers of the late 1800s, including cities with slight topography, wealth and status migrated to the highest elevations to build fine residences. As such, College Hill attracted the most influential citizens in the community offering them refuge from flood waters, the best views and vista of the city and distinctive social status.
Today, College Hill remains a treasured neighborhood, filled with diverse and eclectic style homes with emphasis on individuality. A strong sense of community is imbedded in College Hill’s history. Many traditions remain including seasonal events and celebrations: Just to name a few…
